3D Printing in Egypt: Order a Print or Buy a Printer?

If you need a handful of parts, order them. If you need parts repeatedly, unpredictably, or want to iterate a design, buy the printer. The break-even is not really about money — it is about how many times you will change your mind.

The iteration argument

This is what actually decides it, and it gets ignored because it is hard to put on a spreadsheet.

Design work is not one print. It is a print, a look, a realisation that the hole is 2 mm out, and another print. Owning a machine makes that loop cost an hour. Outsourcing makes it cost days, and — more damagingly — it makes you reluctant to iterate at all. People with their own printer produce better designs, not because the printer is better, but because they are willing to be wrong three times.

So: if you are developing something, own the machine. If you are reproducing something already finalised, ordering is often the better use of money.

When ordering prints makes more sense

  • One-off jobs. A single part, once, with no expectation of a repeat.
  • A technology you would not otherwise own. Nylon, resin for a single detailed master, metal, or a build volume far beyond a desktop machine.
  • Volume beyond your capacity. Two hundred parts on one desktop printer is a fortnight of babysitting.
  • No time to learn. There is a real learning curve. If the part is needed next week and you have never printed before, outsource this one.

When owning a printer makes more sense

  • Iterating a design, as above.
  • Frequent small parts — jigs, fixtures, organisers, replacement clips. Individually trivial, collectively constant.
  • Spare parts for machinery. When a plastic component fails and the imported replacement is months away, a printer in the building is a different category of useful.
  • Teaching or research, where the making is the point.

What owning actually costs

Be honest about the total, not just the purchase price:

  • Filament — the main running cost. Your slicer reports the grams before you print, so cost per part is easy to calculate.
  • Failed prints — common early on, and each one is filament converted to waste.
  • Consumables — nozzles (which abrasive filaments destroy quickly), build plates, desiccant.
  • Your time — the largest and least counted item. Learning, tuning, cleaning up prints.

Set against that: a machine that is available at 11pm when you realise the bracket is wrong.

If you are ordering, prepare the file properly

Most rejected jobs fail for the same avoidable reasons:

  1. Send a watertight model. A mesh with holes or inverted faces cannot be sliced. Most CAD packages will check this for you.
  2. State the units. STL files carry no units. A model intended in millimetres, interpreted in inches, is 25 times too big — and this happens constantly.
  3. Say what the part does. A decorative piece and a load-bearing bracket need different orientation, infill and material. Whoever prints it cannot infer that from geometry.
  4. Design for the process. Steep overhangs need supports, which leave marks. If a surface must be clean, say which one.
  5. Allow for tolerance. Printed holes generally come out slightly undersize. If something must fit a shaft, say so rather than assuming the nominal dimension.

Choosing the material when you order

This matters more in Egypt than in most markets, because of one number: PLA softens at around 60 °C, and a parked car interior or a sunny window ledge exceeds that routinely in summer.

  • Indoors, decorative or prototype — PLA is fine and cheapest.
  • Functional, load-bearing, or warm — PETG.
  • Car interiors, hot environments — ABS or ASA.
  • Outdoors in sun — ASA, which resists UV.
  • Fine detail, models, masters — resin.

Specify where the part will live, and a good supplier will pick correctly.

The middle path

Many businesses land here: order the first version to prove the concept, then buy a machine once it is clear the need is ongoing. That sequence keeps the initial commitment small and means you buy the printer knowing what you actually need it to do — which is a far better basis than a specification sheet.

How long does a printed part take?

A small part, an hour or two. A large one can run overnight. Batches are limited by build volume rather than by speed.

What file should I send?

STL or 3MF for printing. 3MF is better because it carries units and settings; STL carries neither.

Can you print in metal?

Desktop machines print plastics and composites. Metal is a different process — for a metal part, a printed model is often used to prove the fit before machining.

Is 3D printing cheaper than machining?

For small quantities and complex shapes, usually. For simple shapes in volume, machining or moulding wins.
